Launching our Lockdown Community Support

Feeding the hardest hit with our new Robin Hood-style food service!

Takeaway Feasts

We have news! In the face of another UK-wide lockdown, Houria have been stirring up exciting plans to ensure we are doing all we can to support the communities we serve, namely refugee, asylum seeking, migrant women, female survivors of slavery and their families.

Houria chefs are working closely with Baraka Community Cafe in Easton and their crew of incredible female volunteers to prepare a range of low-priced meals made with surplus food. From Thursday 12th November, orders can be collected or they will be delivered by bicycle around Bristol. We are keen to keep it green!

Houria and Baraka will be in the Baraka kitchen creating batches of food, whilst Houria’s Director will also be providing further catering training and development for the refugee chefs and volunteer Allies.

Here are the details:

  • You will be able to order ten delicious, homemade, frozen meals for collection or delivery. The cost for ten meals will be £45 and £15 of that money will ensure that another ten meals are delivered to local women and children who are in a precarious situation at this time.

  • If you prefer, you can pay £30 to cover the price of just the ten meals for your own household.

  • You can order on Thursday evenings and/or during the daytime on Fridays.

  • You will need to make your order via Baraka Cafe Facebook page.

  • You will need to choose either the meat or vegan option. Special dietary requirements can be catered for, please just state what you need when you contact Baraka Cafe.

  • Food deliveries and collections will start on Thursday 12th November and continue until further notice.

Five of the ten meals you will receive will be dreamt up by Baraka Cafe staff and five will be designed by Houria. Expect dishes like Peanut and Plantain Curry with Rice and Peas or a Cheesy Broccoli Pasta Bake with Sauerkraut. From Houria you can expect fresh new twists on our tantalising African feasts. It will all be vegetarian.

If you are wondering how we are keeping the costs so low, it’s down to the generosity of FareShare South West. This week they have sent us squash, corn, peppers, couscous, carrots, celeriac, pomegranate and lemons. Wilson's Restaurant has also donated lots of chard and parsley. We are very grateful to these organisations for joining forces with us to support the hardest hit communities in Bristol with sustenance and love.

So, all this means you can feast on delicious, homemade, ethical food in the safety of your own home, knowing that you have supported people who are facing an extraordinarily hard winter. Contact Baraka Cafe via their Facebook page to order your feasts.

Who knows what delicious delights will be filling your freezer this time next week?!
